About Aversa Wood CraftThis is more than a wood crafting and restoration company, its a family heritage dedicated to continuing the talents, skills and legacy of my beloved father. He was more that just a wood craftsman, he was a master carpenter, a rare find in any craftsman. His skills were renowned within his hometown and surrounding areas of Calabria, Italy. That reputation followed him to America, where he was able to build a business and support seven children with his skill work.
In Italy, his artistry was so desired, he was asked to do the woodworking in churches, including designing and creating pews. His skills included refinishing, building, in-laying, gold leafing, formica, and many other techniques and skills that were much sought after. Almost all of his customers became life-long clients and close family friends. These same clients still treasure and make use of everything my father made for them; what furniture can you say that about today? My father took a modest pride in his work. Each piece/job was extremely serious to him, yet he always remained humble. As a child I was mesmerized by my father's skills and would often watch him create masterpieces out of nothing. As I grew older and he saw my sincere interest in the art, he began to teach me. I was proud to be the apprentice of such a great man. Watching him create pieces of furniture that never used a single nail or screw, but would survive generations, impressing everyone always amazed me. Eventually, with persuasion, he began to use more modern techniques, but never left the skill or integrity of the "old world" leave his work. As he began to give me scrap pieces of work to tinker with, my love of the art grew. Soon I was able to assist him and begin building and creating things on my own. It wasn't until he passed that I realized my real calling in life was to work with wood as he did. My son came up to me with a piece of wood and said, "Daddy, teach me to make something with this like Nonno taught you, I know you have his skills and he wants you to teach me." At that moment, I decided to try to follow in the footsteps of a great man. His uncle taught him in Italy, he taught me here in American and I will work hard in honor of his memory to be able to pass the legacy onto my son. It may seem like a novel reason to choose us over another crafter, but I have a legacy to live up to and to pass on. That's why Aversa Wood Crafts will provide heirlooms your family will come to treasure. |
